Build your first website: HTML, CSS and a little JavaScript
Web development · ages 11–16 · 16 hours over 3 weeks · 3 classes a week, 2 hours each · GH₵450.00
Learners find out what really happens when you type a web address, then build pages of their own: semantic HTML for structure, CSS for colour, spacing and layout, responsive design that works on a phone and a laptop, and JavaScript that reacts to clicks. They learn to debug with the browser’s own tools, to write alt text that helps people, and what never to publish online. Over three weeks — 3 live classes a week, 2 hours each, one class per module, each followed by practice, a quiz and an assignment — it ends with a real site — a school club page or a personal learning portfolio. No experience needed; some programming helps.
What you will learn
- Explain what happens between typing a web address and seeing the page
- Build a page with semantic HTML: headings, sections, lists, links and images
- Write alt text and structure that work for screen-reader users
- Style a page with CSS: colour, fonts, spacing, borders and flexbox layout
- Make a layout responsive with a media query, and test it at different screen sizes
- Add JavaScript that responds to a click and keeps simple state, like a counter or a toggle
- Find and fix bugs with the browser’s developer tools and well-chosen tests
- Decide what is safe to publish, and keep personal information off the web
